Kokstad emerges victorious at Spar tourney
The Southern Schools Regional Tournament was held in Matatiele last Saturday.
KOKSTAD College clinched victory in an enthralling final of the Southern Regionals of the Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament last Saturday.
Regional champions of 2011, Kokstad College met defending champions Creston College in the final. The two clashed in the last pool games where the result was a thrilling 0-0 draw. Both teams attacked the opposition’s goals, but were unable to score.
Creston topped their pool with 10 points, separated by one point from Kokstad, leaving them in second place. Suid-Natal High was third, with Bergview claiming fourth and Ixopo fifth.
In pool B, host school King Edward High were in first place, Southcity came second against Port Shepstone, who came third. Fourth was St Patrick’s College and newcomers to the tournament, St Monica’s, came fifth.
After the pool games, teams played in the cross-pool play-offs. Games were 20 minutes one way, with play-offs and finals being won on penalty shoot-outs, if games were a draw.
The ‘Most Promising Umpire’ award went to Donovan Rothman from Southcity Christian College, qualifying him to umpire at the finals in July.
This weekend, the Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament will be busy with three regionals. Saturday sees Durban Girls’ College host Durban Central Regional at the school and Our Lady of Fatima hosts North Durban Regional at Riverside Club. On Sunday, the Highway Regional will be hosted by Thomas More College.
Two regionals concluded with Kokstad College joining Ferrum High School from Newcastle in the finals to be played in July at Thomas More College and St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls.
