Silver lining on Interzone cloud

Things didn’t go the way of the Interzone golfers.

THE Southern KZN team struggled at the annual KZN Country Districts Interzone tournament held at Empangeni Country Club last weekend, finishing in fifth spot.
It wasn’t anywhere near a full strength team but they would still have liked to have produced better golf, especially in the strokeplay.
In the matchplay, SKZN beat Midlands and East Griqualand on the Saturday morning, and then beat North Coast and halved with Zululand B in the afternoon.
On the final Sunday, they couldn’t maintain their Saturday form and lost to Zululand A and Northern KZN and so eventually finished fifth.
However, team spirit remained pretty good and there was a silver lining, with Jan McDermott (Margate CC) and Altaaf Bux (Port Shepstone CC) being selected for the KZN team to play in the SACD tournament at Fish River Sun in May.
Phil le Roux (Southbroom GC) was named as a reserve.
Zululand clinched the title on home soil, with North Coast next and Northern KZN third. EG were fourth, Zululand B sixth and Midlands the wooden spoonists.
The SKZN team comprised Phil le Roux, Jan McDermott, Elvis Khawula, David Rush, Douglas Sima, Patrick Mavundla, George Bothma and Gary Purtell.
Bux secured a third place finish in the strokeplay championships but wasn’t able to represent the team as he needed to return home to study.
McDermott has been in very solid form this year and produced the goods at Empangeni to win five of his six games.
Le Roux played number one and was a little rusty in terms of tournament play.
The Southern KZN team will return to Empangeni to take on Zululand in a premier league game on April 13.
Unfortunately Bux won’t be able to play as he has his Port Shepstone Country Club championships that weekend.
