SOUTH Coast Hospice will hold its third annual sugar cane mountain bike event, the Halfway Toyota Illovo Sugar Challenge, on August 10 this year.
There will be three races – over 12km, 25km and 45km, with the track stretching across five sugar cane fields.
Since the inaugural event in 2012, Halfway Toyota and Illovo Sugar have been at the forefront as title sponsors.
With the event now in its third year, these two companies have continued with this particular social responsibility.
They have joined forces to raise funds to help hospice with the work it does, especially the support programmes for patients with life-threatening illnesses.
Brian Jones, the dealer principal at Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach, said the company was once again proud to be associated with the event.
“We feel this is a very worthy event in our community with funds raised going to a great organisation, hospice!” he said.
Illovo Sugar Umzimkulu’s general manager, Vis Pillay, said Illovo was proud to be joint sponsor.
“Cycling through the cane fields of the South Coast will give the cyclists a breath of fresh air as they wind through the magnificent, scenic routes. Illovo supports a healthy and active lifestyle and our association with hospice shows our commitment to social responsibility. Illovo strives to be present and add value in all the communities in which we operate. We wish all the cyclists a successful and safe ride, especially our teens,” he said.
Both title sponsors will be entering their own teams where the riders will face an epic challenge to outwit and outlast.
Hospice calls on all riders to take part and thanked all who are supporting this major fund-raiser, especially the farmers who are allowing the use of their cane fields.
