TEAMS were greeted by unpleasant weather conditions and no power at the finals of the midweek league, but this was more than made up for with the excellent hospitality shown by the Port Edward Bowling Club.
The club was rewarded by its own men’s team, namely Jokkie van Buuren (skip), Dave Banks, Barry Payn and Rob Lyle, beating the team from AMBC in the final.
The women’s final was won by Margate ‘C’ skipped by Barbara Brook with Marthie Pringle, Betty Bolton and Yvonne Bausek defeating the team from The Bell. Well played by everyone.
This coming weekend sees the novice singles championships taking place at various venues. Due to its popularity and available green space, the men’s tournament will start a day earlier.
Entrants are advised to check with individual clubs when games are scheduled and bowlers are asked to support and encourage newcomers. The final will be played at The Bell on June 29.

THE Bell women’s midweek league team comprising Maureen Head, Johannie Theron, Margie Randall and Tina Barbour came second in the finals. Sharolyn Dacey and Steve O’Moore were the winners of the Fruit and Veg City 2-4-2 and second place went to Luke Pohl and Johannie Theron. Session prize went to Hew Hodgson and Mada Lindeque.
The KBA novices will be played at The Bell from June 26 and visitors are welcome. The Hibiscus Insurance mixed trips has been cancelled. Duties for the week June 30 to July 6: tabs, Denise and Tickey Nel; bar, Willy Knott; umpire, Ethné Holding.

THE Engel and Volkers mens fours ‘league’ matches were once again an excellent challenge amongst top players and even though Ken Tonge was overseas, his team had another good win to keep them on top.
Barry Delvin, Malcolm Baker, Mike Jeffrey, and Danny McCarthy won on 20+18 and a shot count-out. Bill Brown’s team of Bill Brown, Rassie Erasmus, Barry Herbert and Chris Abram were runners-up and moved up two places on the ladder, also on 20+18.
Ian Hutton’s team of Shane Nienaber, Jonathan Jacobson, Trevor Heywood and Ian Hutton achieved third place with a score of 19+9. Eddie Louw won the 50/50 draw.
The Manaba Kwikspar women’s trips was won by Pam Cole-Cook, Dora Vosloo, and Vi Pells with a score of 4+29. Runners-up were Heather Roberts, Mal Sheppard, and Lorraine Wijtman and session prize went to Gae Gravell, Marie Rogers and Sandy Ferguson. The 50/50 draw was won by Pam Cole-Cook.
The women’s fours is scheduled for the morning of July 4. Duties from June 30, Ida du Randt, Eileen Lloyd and Fred Deakin. Arrangements must be made with someone else if members are unable to do their duties.

IT was nice to see both rinks full for the Fruit and Veg 2-4-2 last Wednesday and the visitor support was greatly appreciated. Barry Herbert and Sharon Smith were the winners with 4+24 and second place went to Chummy Smith and Norma Louw on 4+18.
Session prizes went to Herman and Sharon Scheinberg (visitors) on 2+18, and Tony and Ann Bailey on 2+11. All are welcome at the Riverside ‘Durban July’ fun day and bring and braai on July 5.

THE Nomads played at Southbroom Bowling Club with a turnout of 44-plus members on Father’s Day.
Franci Philpott, Ross Ferguson and Lorraine Wijtman won with 10+21, and second prize went to Malcolm Milne, Herman Scheinberg and Liza Edwards with 10+14, who each won a bottle of wine sponsored by Orange River Cellars.
Third prize went to Lenie Geyer, Keith Roach and Tom Doubell with 10+17, and Betty Bolton, Clive Edmunson and Rob Moni won the sportsman prize. Ethel Robertson was awarded the ‘nearest the jack’ prize sponsored by Orange River Cellars.
The whisky draw was won by Annette Payne and was donated back to the Nomads. Austen Knollys is wished a speedy recovery and thanks go to Southbroom Bowling Club for its hospitality.

PORT EDWARD
DESPITE bitterly cold conditions, the Port Edward men were on fire as they stormed their way to victory in the KBA midweek league. Jokkie van Buuren proudly accepted the trophy with teammates, Dave Banks, Barry Payn and Rob Lyle.
Well done to the Margate women, skipped by Barbara Brook, who took gold in the women’s section.
Behind the scenes, in the kitchen, bar, and as officials, members of the Port Edward Country Club added to the success of the day, showing that teamwork wins the day both on and off the green.
Seven players will take part in the KBA novice singles on June 27, 28 and 29. Des Reid, Estelle Carter and Rob Lyle won the Zanokhanyo mixed trips and Mac Mckenzie, Gawie Bosman and Pat Miller were runners-up. Session went to George Snyman and Tommy and Myra Doubell.

WINNERS of the Wingnuts Plumbing mixed 2-4-2 were Bill and Nelia Reed on a count-out from Don Fowler and Rosalie Bloom. Sessions went to Rosemary Esterhuysen and Hein Bester, and Bob Nelson and Hazel Barton. Chrissie Chancellor won the 50/50.
The next sponsored competitions are the Hopden’s Kwikspar women’s 2-4-2 on June 30, followed by Hibiscus Retirement Villages’ men’s trips on Tuesday 8th and the Hibiscus Insurance Brokers’ mixed trips on July 10.

There will be a bring and braai tomorrow (27th), and the RAC draw and braai will be held on the first Friday in July, the 4th.

CONGRATULATIONS to Port Edward Bowling Club on winning the KBA men’s midweek league.
The next Banners Rest sponsored competitions are the Tops Port Edward mixed pairs on July 4, (catering by Louis La Grange), and the Banners Rest men’s pairs on July 6, with catering by Sheila Hankey and Olive Ashworth.
The club’s open singles draws are posted on the notice board, and members must note that entries for the club mixed pairs on July 13 and 14 close on July 1.

MARGATE Bowling Club has done it again! Hearty congratulations to the KBA women’s midweek league winners, Barbara Brook, Marthie Pringle, Betty Bolton and Yvonne Bausek. The MBC men won bronze.
The women’s pairs was won by Ronita Kalil and Pam Cole-Cook, Ian Kalil and James Mitchell won the men’s, and Athol Robertson and Dieter Scholz were runners-up. All from MBC.
Dora Vosloo and Gae Gravelle on 4+28 were winners of the Manaba Kwikspar women’s 2-4-2 last Friday, runners-up were Lenie Geyer and Yvonne Bausek on 4+27, and session went to Vicky de Beer and Mal Moni on 2+15.
The next sponsored tournament on the morning of June 27 is the Mooirivier Brokers’ 2-4-2. Contact Ian Hutton or Ellen Cawker at 081 3166634 or enter names on forms posted on notice boards. Visitors are welcome to enter teams.
The next bingo evening will be on July 7 in the clubhouse, so bring friends and family for an evening of fun.
