Umzumbe surfer wins SA sports award
He is also an internationally accredited surfing coach.
SANDILE ‘Cyril’ Mqadi of Surfing South Africa, who is from Umzumbe, was named volunteer of the year at the 2014 South African Sports Awards which were held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg last Sunday.
Sandile, who works with former street children at Umthombo, began his involvement in surfing in Umzumbe back in 1994.
He is an internationally accredited judge who has worked on major national and international events both in South Africa and abroad.
He is also an internationally accredited surfing coach and has helped young surfers from Umzumbe and Durban to become better surfers. But it is his commitment to coaching disadvantaged children at Addington Beach in Durban which earned him the this award.
The annual SA Sports Awards reward South African sports stars for their excellence in various sports. But this year the awards were not only about those who won gold medals. Those who also displayed a heart of gold were duly honoured too.
