Champion of Champions tournament was a great success

KINGFISHER BOWLING ASSOCIATION

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who made it through to the Champion of Champions at The Bell last weekend.

The eventual champions on a knock-out basis were Leonie Booth from Port Edward and Keith Harcombe from The Bell. Runner-up in the women’s section was Daphne Sapsford from The Bell with Margate’s Ellen Cawker and Umtentweni’s Tammy Gibbons in joint third. The men’s runner-up was John Chemier from Scottburgh and in joint third place were Graham Volck from Southbroom and Barry Payn from Port Edward.

The executive would like to thank Clothes Line for its continued support and all those involved in making the tournament such a success.

A reminder that the first 2016 diary meeting for the north will be held at Southport on Monday, September 7 at 9.30am, and the south at Southbroom on Tuesday, September 8 at 9.30am.

Good luck to Ellen Cawker, Barbara Brook, Pam Cole-Cook and Vi Pells from Margate who are playing in the delayed KZN women’s fours semi-finals in Durban this Saturday.

HIBBERDENE

MALKY McManus and Joey Venter won the mixed three-bowl pairs last Friday from Dennis ‘the menace’ Lewis and Barbs Sates. The session prize was won by Chris Snyman and Louise Shone. Lucky draws were then staged for the non-winners and these prizes went to the leads, Martin Rautenbach, Louise Snyman and Judy Hoyer. Thanks to Pat Symcox and the team at ReMax for the generous sponsorship.

The next competition is the mixed trips sponsored by Tiago’s this Friday afternoon at 1.30pm.

Normally from the beginning of September, social bowls in the the afternoon commences at 2pm but as the green is closing from Monday, 21st, it has been decided to leave the starting time at 1.30pm.

Arthur Seager and Hana Svobova represented the club at the Champion of Champions at The Bell last Saturday. They enjoyed the competition and found very strong players in attendance.

MARGATE CC

THE Shelly Beach SuperSpar mixed trips held last Tuesday was won by Annette Payne, Trevor Heywood and Danny McCarthy with an amazing score of 4+33. Runners-up on 4+7 were Bill Brown, Barry Herbert and Dawn Oehealy. Session prize went to Dora Vosloo, Helen Prinsloo and Martiens Olivier with a score of 2+5.

Ria van Vuuren was the lucky 50 /50 draw winner. On Friday, September 4 the women’s fours will be played at Margate and the club’s AGM will be held on Saturday, September 5 at 2pm.

UMTENTWENI

DUMSANI Madlala and Tammy Gibbons both did the club proud in the KBA Champion of Champions played over the weekend, with Tammy reaching the semi-finals and taking bronze.

The winners of women’s 2-4-2 competition played on Thursday were Marie Coetzer and Mada Lindeque. Jane Massam and Sandi Shepherd were runners-up and Barbara Fernlhough and Susan Fourie took the session prize.

The next competitions will be the Harbour View SuperSpar mixed pairs on Friday the 4th and the Schooners restaurant mixed trips on Monday, September 7. The inter-club trips scheduled to be played on Tuesday, September 8 has been postponed to Thursday, October 8.

The battle of the sexes quiz on Wednesday was won by an all-girls team. On this occasion the men had to settle for second place.

RIVERSIDE

BILL Brown and Dawn Oehley won the Fruit and Veg City 2-4-2 competition from runners-up John Sutton and Betty Bolton. The first session went to Martiens and Jo Olivier. Yvonne and Trevor Anderson won the second session and the sportsmen prize went to Linda Hansell and Cobie Engelbrecht.

Members are reminded that this Friday there will be a corner-to-corner competition at 5pm followed by a potjie competition costing R30 per person.

SOUTHPORT

TWENTY supporters turned up at the Champion of Champions tournament at The Bell on Saturday morning to see their club champion Cosmos Gumede in action. Unnfortunately it appeared that Cosmos was overawed by the occasion and was soon down 13-3. When Cosmos finally settled down and started to get into the game his supporters showed their delight with applause, which seemed to encourage him. So much so that he pulled back to peel at 15! He even went ahead 20-19, and it took a measure for second shot on the next end to defeat him. His followers were all very proud of the manner in which he distinguished himself.

The renovations to the clubhouse will be completed this week in good time for the diary meeting for the northern clubs on Monday, September 7 at 9.30am.

The servicing of the green is progressing well and the favourable weather is still playing along. The green may be opened earlier than anticipated. So watch this space.

A Fellowship Day replacing the rained-out day earlier in the year will be held at Hibberdene, on Sunday, September 19 at 10am. The ‘Bowls Cricket Trophy’ will be on the line and all members who originally made themselves available for this event should please note.

IT is with great sadness that we advise that Baba du Plessis died suddenly on Monday of this week. Sincere condolences and messages of sympathy are extended to Hannes and her family.

Winners of the Peg & Punter mixed trips played on Tuesday, August 25 were Vi Pells, Dave Hume and Ally Weir, with runners-up Bob Francis, Kotie Snyman and Amorie Schoëler. Second session went to Steve Rennie, John Keppler and Amy Körner and the 50/50 board to Barry Payn.

The Indulgence women’s pairs played on Wednesday, August 26 was won by Louise Dry and Val Smith, and runners-up were Pam Cole-Cook and Vi Pells. Second session went to Maureen la Grange and Amorie Schoëler and the 50/50 board to Vi Pells.

Congratulations to the club drawn mixed pairs winners this year, Janet Venter and John Keppler, with runners-up Glen Allen and Amorie Schoëler.

The next sponsored competitions are the GP Security mixed pairs on Friday, September 4, and the Tops Port Edward men’s pairs on Sunday, September 6.

WINNERS of the Video Plus DVD mixed trips last Friday were Barry Payn and Francien van der Merwe. Runners-up were Jokkie van Buuren and Lynn Grant with the session prize going to Estelle Carter and Rob Lyle.

Congratulations to Leoni Booth and Barry Payn for achieving a gold and bronze medals respectively in the KBA Champion of Champions men’s and women’s tournament held at The Bell in Southport last Saturday and Sunday.

A very well attended Battle of the Sexes was held at the ultimate social bowls day of the season on Saturday with the fairer sex prevailing . Well done ‘ladies’ !

Greens will be closed until mid-November.

The annual prize-giving will take place on Friday, September 25 at 5pm sharp. A light meal will be provided by the club.

CONGRATULATIONS to our two singles champions who played in the KBA Champion of Champions last weekend with Norma Ronald going through to the semi-finals and Graham Volck winning bronze. Well done both of you.

Wolf Security open trips played last Thursday was won by Chris Faber, Kobus Faber and Richard Derman. Runners-up were Rod Phelps, Peter Bennett and Mary Phelps. First session was won by Hans Wijtman, Wynand Bezuidenhout and Deks Zunker. The second session went to Malcolm Milne, Nico Mantoan and Viv Date. Chrissie Faber won the 50/50.

Fazenda Restaurant 2-4-2 was won by Frans du Plooy and Norma Ronald.

The band of hardy bowlers who enjoyed ‘playing in the rain’ last Sunday for the monthly get-together were joined by a good crowd for the customary braai and a good day was had by all.

The winners of the Manaba Kwikspar women’s 2-4-2 on Friday, August 20 were Trixi Smith and Maureen Roach on 4+8. Annette Payne and Betty Bolton on 3+10 were runners-up and the session went to Sharon Scheinberg and Yvonne Bausek on 2+6.

The winners of the Uvongo Spar open 2-4-2 were Ron Canning and Yvonne Bausek on 4+22. Herman and Sharon Scheinberg were runners-up on 4+13. Denzel Massyn and Gary Hess won the first session on 2+10 and Trevor Heywood and Philip Audibert took the second session on 2+9.

The next sponsored competition is the Margate Panel Beaters men’s 2-4-2 this Friday morning, September 4th.

Ellen Cawker is congratulated on her bronze medal win at the KBA Champ of Champs played at The Bell over the weekend.

It is with deep regret that we report the death of Norman Slater and extend our sincere condolences to his wife, family and friends. Norman will be missed at the club.
