Wayne’s World: Who will cross the finishing line first?

The challenge will raise funds for under-privileged athletes.

WE often come across really pointless and ridiculous challenges but this past week I stumbled across a healthy challenge which definitely lends itself to all kinds of well-being.

Last week, after the weekly South Coast Striders time trial, I overheard two athletes challenging each other to a race. The challenge was to be over a relatively short distance of 15 km. Of course I’m never one to let these kind of things just stop there so the race has been set in stone. The race will take place on Sunday, October 4 in conjunction with the South Coast Striders walking championship.

Believe me there will be no walking between these two.

The two competitors are Freek ‘Grondvoel’ Stander versus Trevor ‘The Fireman’ Burger and the stats on the two are frighteningly similar. Let’s take a look at what each athlete brings to the table.

In the ‘right’ corner we have Freek. He towers at a height of 6ft 4 inches, weighs in at 87kgs and his running career extends over three years. His passion, besides fishing, is to bring Trevor to his knees.

In the ‘left’ corner there’s 6ft 3,5 inches Trevor who weighs in at a healthy 94kgs but is shedding weight as we speak due to intensive training. Like Freek, he has also been running for three years. Both have completed full marathons (42.2km) and also competed in the Comrades marathon of 2015.

So the healthy part of the challenge comes down to giving back to under-privileged athletes. There has been a large influx of unemployed athletes wanting to join the South Coast Striders. We have been sponsoring them club colours and club fees but are running short of funds for running shoes. Theses particular new-comers have been shining brightly in the races they have entered, so my appeal to everyone is to please help us help them.

Come and predict your winner of the challenge, raffle tickets with be on sale at R10 from Tight Line Fisheries outlets in Shelly Beach and Margate as well as Wayne’s Auctions in Margate. Prizes up for grabs are a wine hamper, a R150 Tight Line Fisheries voucher and a wrist watch set.

Freek and Trevor are taking this event very seriously, so it is over to you to back your winner.

Runners meet on Wednesdays at 5.30pm at the Uvongo pier in Lilliecrona Boulevard for a 4km or 8km time trial. Walkers meet at the Striders’ clubhouse in Uvongo every Wednesday at 5.15pm . On Sunday, September 13 fit, fast walkers will do a 15km walk from Waffle House in Ramsgate at 6am.

Keep running and walking because every stride counts.
