‘Bangalore Belly’ puts paid to Mansfield’s matchplay march

The golfer is picking up some vital international experience.

A case of the ‘Bangalore Belly’ (better known as Delhi Belly perhaps) put paid to Clayton Mansfield’s chances of making an impact in the India Amateur played in Bangalore last week.

The Durban Country Club player lost in the first round after having finished in the top 10 after the two rounds of strokeplay qualifying.

The 22-year-old shot 72 and 73 for a share of seventh at the Karnataka Golf Association course.

Malcolm Mitchell (Kloof CC), who also made the trip east, shot 72 and 79 to tie 31st on seven-over 151.

Unfortunately he lost out in an eight-man playoff for the final two spots.

Mansfield was left to rue a rather untimely bout of ‘gastro’.

“I felt really good about my game, having found something small on the range after the strokeplay and started hitting it even better than in qualifying.

I was really keen to contend, but then got sick, which was a real pity,” he said.

Other than that, he really enjoyed the experience.

He found the golf course similar to home in some ways. “The course was a real test, long and with Bermuda grass (Country Club style) so it suited my game with the grain,” he said.

“It’s quite something going over to India. It’s completely different to anywhere else I have been. The food is different and the way the people are and how they operate is very different, so I’m glad I got that opportunity,” he said.

* The KwaZulu-Natal super seniors, led by Richard Nel (Maritzburg GC), finished a commendable third in the South African Super Senior Interprovincial at Pezula Golf Club in Knysna last week.

Considering how strong Western Province and Central Gauteng are at this level, this was not bad at all.

Western Province celebrated an extraordinary achievement by winning their seventh successive super seniors IPT.

The tournament was played in excellent spirit at a venue that is breathtakingly beautiful.
