Track Torque: Hamilton simply superb in Shanghai

Ferrari now seem on the back-foot despite having a very fast car and must be very frustrated for a win which they are more than capable of.

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas dominated the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday for a Mercedes 1-2 procession.

The only real excitement in the race was Max Verstappen improving his position ahead of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, and behind Sebatian Vettel in the other Ferrari, who finished third. So that was the top five battle for supremacy.

A little way back in sixth position came Pierre Gasley in the second Red Bull after a much better race for him so far this year.

Daniel Ricciardo also had a much more successful race in the Works Renault in seventh place while Nico Hulkenberg had to retire the other Renault into last place.

Sergio Perez was by far the best of the two Racing Point cars which are also powered by Mercedes engines.

He did well to finish eighth and kept a hard-charging Kimi Raikkonen at bay in the very fast Ferrari, powered Alfa Romeo who finished ninth.

The Honda engined cars had a good day with not only Max Verstappen’s fourth position and Pierre Gasly’s sixth position but also Alexander Albon (the new new youngster at Toro Rosso) finishing tenth.

As usual, the weekend’s events in China were a great success with a huge crowd present and there is now talk from the organisers that we could have two Chinese Grands Prix, one of which will be a street race around one of the major cities.

Ferrari now seem on the back-foot despite having a very fast car and must be very frustrated for a win which they are more than capable of.

They have two of the very best drivers who, it would seem, bring out the best in each other.

Let us hope that they can get their act together in time for the Azerbaijan at Baku in two weeks’ time. I think we are still in for a very exciting and closely fought season.
