Merrick breaks long distance barrier

The weather was really good for running.

FOUR runners from Scottburgh Athletics Club headed down to Cape Town to take part in the recent Two Oceans Marathon.

The weather was really good for running, but a last minute change in the route due to protest action made the course more challenging.

It was diverted from Chapman’s Peak, with runners having to go up the Ou Kaapse Weg pass.

Merrick Kennedy took part in his first ultra marathon, the 56km, and finished in 5:57.

Ricky Pillay (6:46) also ran the ultra marathon.

Stella Scott (2:17) and Sue McAlpine (2:32) took part in the 21km.

A week later, four club runners took part in the South Coast Ultra, held on the lower South Coast, starting and finishing at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

In the 21km race, Jennifer Parsons clocked 2:28 and Rashida Moosa 2:25.

In the 48km event Nqamulela Gumede finished in 3:45 and Zibuyile ‘Vicky’ Langa in 6:04.

A huge thanks must go to South Coast Striders Athletics Club which hosted and put on a very well organised event.

Four Scottburgh AC took part in the recent Gaterite Challenge Verulam Marathon, namely Chantel Bromwich (4:45), Warren Daniels (4:45) and Janeen Botha (5:05) and Nelia van Schalkwyk (5:16).
