Off the Hook: Ski-boat interzonals coming up

Fishing on the South Coast was reasonably good throughout the whole of last week.

DON’T forget to save the date for one of the biggest fishing events on the mid-South Coast this week.

The annual Pennington Ski-boat Interzonals will be held from May 17 to 19.

The event sees a whole lot of teams from various clubs around KwaZulu-Natal compete and there are usually quite a few anglers fishing for their provincial colours.

Fishing on the South Coast was reasonably good throughout the whole of last week.

There were very few currents and the boats from Rocky Bay did well all around.

Fishermen were also lucky to be out on the beautiful flat sea.

Some good-sized shad were reeled in by the shore fishermen, too.

Skipper of boat Wotalotigot, Wikus van Kraayenburg, managed to catch a 12kg prodigal son, also known as a cobia fish to many.

This fish is one of the most tastiest on the South Coast and definitely among the strongest.

They have an elongated, spindle-shaped body with a flattened head and can reach a maximum length of two metres.

Their bodies are covered in small scales and are dark brown in colour with white bellies.

Cobia mainly feed on crab, squid and smaller fish and are known to be ‘curious fish’ so they do often approach fishing vessels.

In news a little further down the coast, the 10th annual Safire King of the Sea fishing challenge takes place at Pumula this weekend.

This competition sees kayaks, jet skis and ski-boats against each other at sea trying to reel in the best gamefish, in which only couta, yellowfin tuna, snoek, dorado and wahoo count for competition purposes.

Entries are still open and entry forms can be obtained by emailing events@gofishmagazine.co.za or visiting the website www.gofishmagazine.co.za.
