Chic golf as fashion and flair take to Southbroom fairways

As always, it was a festive occasion, with great weather and much fun and fanfare on and off the course as well.

Southbroom Golf Club’s third ‘major’ of the year, the Ladies Classic, was once again a resounding success.

Golfers travelled from around the country to take part in the three day event last week. This year’s theme was ‘Around the World in just three days’ commemorating Southbroom GC’s 80th birthday.

As always, it was a festive occasion, with great weather and much fun and fanfare on and off the course as well. Winners were Lynne Blackstock and Karen Burns on a score of 42, 44 and 43 for a total of 129.

Top 5: 1 Lynne Blackstock and Karen Burns 129; 2 Gill Huddy and Sandy FitzGerald 127; 3 Wendy Counihan and Binny Stephen 121; 4 Allyson Thomas and Shirley Jeffery 118; 5 Irene Schanda and Janet Humphrey 117.

In third place were Wendy Counihan and Binny Stephen.

The previous Wednesday’s competition was won by Margie Sherratt and Jeanne Powell on 40 points. The men’s section was won on 43 points by John Lison and Piet Joubert, by one from Gavin Sole and Dave Fox.

Runners-up were Gill Huddy (left) and Sandy FitzGerald.

Last Friday’s business day saw former member Phil le Roux, now a teaching pro in Knysna, win with locals Malcolm Greenland, Dave Neilson and Colin McKay on 87 pts

The Pam Quarmby trophy last Saturday was won on 100 points by Jill Webster, Shirley Jeffery, Shelley Myers and Irene Schanda. The men’s alliance saw Geoff Skelton, Gurney Mathews, Dave and John Fox win on 93 points.
