Off the Hook: Big surf brings big fish

Even though it has been a little windy lately, fishermen on the South Coast still had some very big surf to work with and obviously fairly good weather.

Other catches included a beautiful 14kg musselcracker caught on board boat Wotalotigot, skippered by Wikus van Kraayenburg, as well as some soldiers and rosy job fish.

Arno Potgieter caught two lovely yellow belly rockcod of 10kgs and 7kgs respectively at Rocky Bay.

Yellow belly rockcod are usually found in and around rocky reefs. The juveniles however, are mainly found more inshore, in places such as rock pools.

For those a little further down the South Coast, or who will be heading that way soon, do take note of the upcoming Shelly Beach Ski-boat Festival.

This will run from June 19 to 22 and there are loads of prizes to be won. Last year, more than 150 anglers entered the competition and the heaviest fish caught were mainly yellowfin, amberjack and king mackerel (couta).
