Indulge in a taste of Portugal at annual mariners festival
This year the venue is The Estuary Hotel and it takes place next weekend, July 13 and 14.
In July 1552 a carrack (sailing ship), named the Sao Joao, was wrecked off the coast near Port Edward. The survivors managed to swim ashore and walk from the southernmost tip of KwaZulu-Natal to Mozambique.
Every year the Port Edward community commemorates their bravery by holding the `Portuguese Mariners Food and Wine Family Festival’.

Wonderful, authentic Portuguese food along with traditional folk dancing are always the highlights of the festival. And festival-goers will also be able to enjoy an `oyster experience’.
There is a special service at the monument at the beachfront on Sunday where the tale of the Sao Joao will be retold.
If you enjoy good food and great entertainment – head south next weekend.
