Off the Hook: Sards skip Scottburgh
Young fishermen recognised as the number one U16 Natal Deep Sea Angling team in the country.
Sardines finally made an appearance in the upper South Coast area – more specifically Amanzimtoti – unfortunately skipping the mid-South Coast region on their travels.
The sards were netted in huge batches last year and back in 2009 the first South Coast netting of the season took place in Pennington on July 28, and in 2017, they were netted first in Scottburgh on June 21.

This, the first catch of the season, sold like hotcakes with prices ranging from R1 200 to R1 500 per crate. Those willing to drive around town could find a bargain – a couple of fishermen were parked on the roadside with bakkie loads full of fish which they sold for between R60 and R90 a dozen.
Even though the sards were a no-show (for now), there is still some brilliant fishing news.

Ryan Pellew, a member of the Pennington Ski-boat Club and captain of the U16 Natal Deep Sea Angling team, and his team mates Owen Barclays and Mohammed Abdul, competed at the South African Deep Sea Angling Association Bottom Fish Nationals in East London late last month.
The young fishermen managed to earn themselves first place. They were recognised as the number one U16 team in the country and received gold medals for their efforts.
The weather was generally pretty good over the past week, with plenty of shad coming out at Rocky Bay and surrounding areas. The water remained cold which should prove attractive to the sards, so here’s hoping!
