Herald Fishing: Rare catch off Margate pier

The gamefish have been scarce and only a few garrick and kingfish have come out.

Where are the sardines? This has been the main question asked for the past couple of weeks. Predicting where the sardines will be is an art that the netters have an eye for.

Fishing has been phenomenal on all fronts. The weather has been kind and the sea has obliged, most days.

Gerald Bezuidenhout of Margate caught a 13kg yellowfin tuna off the Margate pier recently, using live shad as bait.

This is a fairly rare thing, not the fish itself, but the fact that it was caught from the pier.

Yellowfin tuna is caught mainly off boats and it is very rare to catch them close to the shore.

Shad are back on the run and anglers have been busy on the rocks. Reports of shad being frenzy at Pumula, Umtentweni, The block in Port Shepstone, Orange Rocks in Uvongo, Uvongo Pier, Margate Pier and Splash Rock in Port Edward.

The gamefish have been scarce and only a few garrick and kingfish have come out.

Spinning early morning with plugs or sliding a live bait might get you lucky.

Reports of a couple kob being landed.

The offshore anglers have been landing some great fish. There have been very good catches coming from north down to the south coast regions.

The bottom fishing has also been particularly good on the south coast and all of the deeper wrecks and reefs have been producing the goods.

Please remember to leave the areas that you fish in a better condition than when you got there. Take a few moments to pick up some litter and take it to the nearest bin.
