The race attracted runners from various parts of the world.

Most people like to lie around on the beach or perhaps do some fishing or snorkeling when they visit Mauritius.

Not the Milligans, Graeme and Taryn of Shelly Beach.

“There I was thinking we’re going for a holiday and I end up running a marathon,” laughed Graeme.

The two South Coast Striders ended up taking part in the 2019 Mauritius Marathon over 42.2km last Sunday.

Graeme clocked a time of fours hours and seven minutes, with Taryn finishing in five hours and two minutes.

It was her first marathon and she handled it pretty well.

In fact, she was a little sneaky about, keeping it secret and opting to give her first marathon a go away from the spotlight!

Now she’ll have to follow up back home.

Taryn and Graeme Milligan of Shelly Beach.

There were numerous South Africans in the field, making up more than half the numbers.

“Many wore their proudly South African colours and there was a great vibe on the day,” said Graeme.

The race took place on the southern part of the famous island, between Le Morne and Bel Ombre.

The route was beautiful and picturesque, with palm trees lining the road and hotels and such all nearby.

It was also hot and humid. “We were sweating before the race had even started,” said Graeme.

The finish line was on the beach of Saint Felix.

The race attracted runners from various parts of the world, including countries like France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Lithuania, Spain, Slovenia, the United States of America, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and China.

It was won by South African Karel Burger in a time of two hours and 46 minutes.
