Off the hook: Captain reels in an eel
Even though the water is still very cold, the sardines seem to have disappeared and moved on to deeper reefs, with a couple of shoals last spotted about 5kms out to sea.
FISHING has been a little disappointing on the mid-South Coast lately.
This is due to the big swells which made it almost impossible for fishermen to keep their lines in the water as they kept being pushed back to shore.

Even though the water is still very cold, the sardines seem to have disappeared and moved on to deeper reefs, with a couple of shoals last spotted about 5kms out to sea.
Fishermen tried to take advantage of the good weather while they could, trying to get a line out in between periods of gale force winds. The highlight of the past week for the skipper of boat Wotalotigot, Wikus van Kraayenburg, was when he caught a moray eel.

“This was a treasured moment because it’s not very easy to catch such a large specimen,” he said.
It took Wikus a good couple of minutes just to get the hook out of its mouth because of all the big teeth. After the eel, estimated to weigh about 7kgs, was admired it was safely released.

Some other great catches from Wotalotigot included mussel cracker and an Englishman.
