Geelbek have been in the spotlight over the past week.
This is one of the most popular catches in South Africa, and the fish are known for their tasty flesh.
A geelbek is also known as a Cape salmon, or if you’re an Aussie, they’re called a teraglin.
Plenty of geelbek were caught along the mid-South Coast last week, mainly at night, and commercial fishermen have found their days out on the water to be very fruitful.
This fish was given the Afrikaans name ‘geelbek’ (yellow mouth) because the inside of its mouth and gill covers are yellow.
Geelbek are also identifiable by their pointed heads, elongated shape and silver body.
And watch out – they have rows of seriously sharp backward-pointing teeth.
They do put up a pretty good fight so good luck to anyone trying to get them out of the water.
For those who are still following the sards – last Thursday, some were spotted far out to sea at Scottburgh but none were netted.
