‘Umkomaasters’ emerge at club champs
All divisions were tightly contested but none more so than the men's B division when three players, namely Jacques Hulley, Nelson Moonsamy and Barrie Taylor finished tied after 36 holes.
Umkomaas Golf Club members took on the course, and one another on, in the club Championships recently.
The course was in immaculate condition and thanks must go to Devlyn Fraser and the greens team and Nelson Moonsamy who organised the tournament superbly.

All divisions were tight after the first day’s play on Saturday when most players battled the wind and interesting pin positions.
And with just a shot of two separating leaders and their nearest rivals Sunday promised to be an interesting day out.
Golfers were rewarded with excellent weather as the wind held off but tight pin positions and quick greens meant there could be no slouching.
All divisions were tightly contested but none more so than the men’s B division when three players, namely Jacques Hulley, Nelson Moonsamy and Barrie Taylor finished tied after 36 holes.
The gents then began the first four hole play-off with an armada of golf cars following them as nearly the entire club joined to support.
Barrie and Jacques remained tied and went on the loop (holes 1, 2, 17 and 18) again to determine the winner.
Day 1 leader Jacques’s nerve held and he finished victorious.
The men’s C division was won by Keith Vergottini, who shot an excellent nett 68 on the first day to give himself a comfortable lead.
With two consistent rounds of golf, Dean Naicker did enough to hold off competition, including brother Viv and nephew Tash, to retain his men’s club champion title.
In the ladies competition Sabiha Bacaus and Natalie Singer had a ding-dong battle on both days with the lead switching half a dozen times.
In the end, Sabiha emerged victorious by three shots, retaining her title. Lesa Vergottini won the ladies C division.
In the competition within the competition, Saga Reddy won the Halfway Malanda Monthly Mug on Saturday with a nett 67.
Once again the camaraderie and support shown by all members is testament to our moniker as #TheFriendliestClub. Well done to all the worthy winners.
