Brett ‘Rowe-bot’ defies ‘iffy’ weather

It was the Sanlam Cancer challenge for ladies and gents last Saturday.

IT was the Sanlam Cancer challenge for ladies and gents last Saturday.

The weather was looking decidedly ‘iffy’ as we set off and the rain, although welcome, caused a few bailouts which resulted in a few fines.

For the ladies Debbie du Toit managed 30 points to win with regular playing partner Lauren Davey coming second and Hayley Gilliver with her new driver coming third.

The men’s A division winner was Pete Gilliver, who scraped home just ahead of playing partner Selva Govender.

On a day of miserable weather and scores to match, the only bright ray of sunshine came from the clubs of Brett Rowe and his 43 points to easily win the B division over Tony Kennedy and John Mills, second and third respectively.

Anton Visage, fresh from his Friday Chicken Run, win carried on in the same vein and claimed the C division over Nick Bremner and Gary Jones.

Apart from Brett’s fine score, the runners-up scores were omitted to save embarrassment and blushes.

Never mind the scores, the main winner was the cancer foundation for research and development in combatting this terrible disease whose funds were boosted by the players and their fines, especially the “bailers”.

It was plus and minus with rings last Wednesday as members played the betterball bonus bogey.

Plus 8 was the winning score, made by ever present Brian Richards and Denis Brown.

Four plusses behind was Colin Moodie, once again on the scoresheet, along with Hans Beuthe.

The hidden holes and the par threes for 2-clubs proved tough as nobody found either.

Two names that have been missing in the column of late, Mick Marriott and Geoff Thommasen, turned up and were roundly welcomed to the Captain’s Table to pick up the Stone.

Flyer’s footnote: The little white ball won’t move until you hit it, and there’s nothing you can do after it’s gone.
