Off the Hook: Blue skies make for fantastic fishing

Some of the best catches of the week included geelbek - especially in the Park Rynie area - as well as some salmon, shad, silverbream and blacktail.

AS everyone should have noticed last week, the weather on the mid-South Coast has been phenomenal, especially considering the strong wind and rain we had prior to that.

It was nothing but clear skies (throughout most of the week) and sunshine which made fishing a whole lot better and more enjoyable, of course.

Blacktail fish are usually found in shallow or rocky reefs and what’s interesting about them is that they have the ability to change their sex at any stage of their development.

Even though these fish are a common catch for recreational fishermen, they may not be sold or bought in the country as they are listed as a ‘no-sale species’.

They are only allowed to be caught by fishermen with recreational permits.

There was quite a lot of activity at Preston beach on Saturday and Sunday.

Shoals of little fish were spotted at the beach and they managed to attract some of the bigger creatures of the sea, too.

Pods of dolphins and whales could be seen near the shoals.

It really was a stunning sight, especially if you’re into whale watching.
