‘Big Fish’ triumphs but ‘Zorro’ wins ‘sledgemony’ battle

Mike Anthony may have lost the match but he won the battle of the chirps, or sledges.

GAVIN Sole and David Rush will meet in the final of Southbroom Golf Club’s matchplay final this year, after they won their semi-final matches last Saturday.

As expected, Gavin beat old nemesis Mike ‘Zorro’ Anthony. The match was a lot tighter than expected, with Mike managing to push the Big Fish all the way to the 13th hole.

Jokes aside, Gavin was his usual consistent self and Mike was a touch off form with the clubs, but not with the chirps, or sledging.

He did, however, have a chance to put some pressure on Gavin with what would have been a sensational up-and-down on the 8th hole from the back of the 7th green. (True story).

Unfortunately, the putt slipped past the edge, giving Gavin too much breathing space.

In the other game, George Bothma’s steady fade deserted him on the back nine – after he played the front nine in two under par – and he put two in the Frederika Preserve, on the 14th and 17th, to gift David two holes.

The match was over on the 17th. By then Mike was already halfway through his steak, egg and chips, comfortable in the knowledge he had time for a nap before the big game between Arsenal and Liverpool.

That would turn out to be even more one-sided than his golf match, with the Reds dominant in a 3-1 hiding of the Gunners.

Here are some of Mike’s subtle sledging efforts to knock the Fish off his stride.

“Greens seems a little slower than usual,” he mumbled on the first, loud enough for all to hear.

“Too early to be starting this nonsense,” after Sole holed a long par putt for a half on the 2nd.

“You know all the others guys are rooting for me!” as the match reached 5-up.

“Have you ever driven this green?” on the 13th, a tight par four with bush, water and bunker all nearby.

The regular competition last Wednesday was won by Lorraine Cook and Jill Webster on 46 points, from Sharon Turnbull-Jackson and Heleen Hissey.

In third place were Di Morris and Augi D’ewes on 39 points.

Men’s Stableford was won on 45 points by Errol Amm and Don Osbourn, by one from Roger Hissey and Paul Lawson, as well as Jim Cook and Olliver Ransome, and Steve du Toit and Vernon Duggan.

The competition last Saturday was won on 93 points by Brian Brasher, Chris Miller, Jim Cook and Olliver Ransome, on a countout from Malcolm Greenland, Clive Miller, Rory O’Donnell and Colin McKay.

In third place on 89 points were Vernon Duggan, Anthony Hughes, Gary Purtell and Erwin Schanda.
