Matchplay machines battle fierce wind

The course will be closed from September 2 to 5 for the annual spring treatment.

UMKOMAAS GOLF CLUB

THE strong wind and splatters of rain didn’t put off many of our members, who turned out to play in Bruce Sutcliffe’s annual sponsored day last Saturday.

Scores were good considering the conditions and the first four spots were determined by count-outs.

Sabiha Bacaus and Riek Janse van Rensburg took first place on a count-out from Wally Kent and Dave Mulroy, who also scored 41 points.

Barrie Taylor and Mickey Eriksen, on 40 points, counted-out father-son team of Viv and Tash Naicker for third place.

Nearest the pins went to Dave Kemp (4th), Barrie Taylor (9th) and Wally Kent (17th) but it seems the gusting winds meant it was impossible for anyone to hit the 13th green!

The finals of the men’s matchplay also took place on Saturday and the finalists played well in the tough conditions.

Up-and-coming junior, Rory Bernadis, played well to beat Dave Robertson and take the C Division title.

Nelson Moonsamy beat Chris Pillay in the B Division and Joe Mkhungo beat Tash Naicker in the A Division to be crowned the club matchplay champion for 2019.

The course will be closed from September 2 to 5 for the annual spring treatment.

Thanks to members and visitors for their patience as we conduct this important work to ensure our beautiful course continues to play in the excellent condition it has been.

Thanks to chairman Devlyn Fraser, who also acts as greenkeeper as he guides our small, yet dedicated team of green staff.
