‘Ballies’ on a winning streak

We look forward to the next meeting at Scottburgh in October.

I WAS once asked why a group connected to a retirement village call themselves the Eagles. Surely one of those other names like ‘Geriatrics’ or ‘Ballies’ would be more appropriate?

Well, an article in the September issue of the Country Life magazine gives the answer. Umdoni Forest is the home of a family of crowned eagles. Unfortunately our family of eagles is now one short.

One of the founding members, Frank Hulley, who also was an ex-chairman and everybody’s friend, struck his last putt the week before.

A minute’s silence was observed at the prize-giving in respect of a very popular man.

Once again the Village Eagles turned up in their numbers.

The waiting list for a residence at Umdoni Retirement Village is growing, but the good news is, the Eagles will always have room for a few more.

The growing numbers turning up for a game is welcomed and only makes the day more pleasant.

A hearty well done to the draw master Gus Crous who manages the now large draw with the same enthusiasm and efficiency he did when the numbers were half of those now playing.

Chairman of the Village Eagles, Geoff Bacon (left) congratulates the winners of the recent golf day, Dave Craig, Billy Smith and Joe Carpenter.

The scores alone will tell you that Selborne Park Golf Club was in good condition and their hospitality reached the usual heights.

The lost ball count (not enough numbers on my laptop to report how many) will confirm that there is water on the layout with tricky carries on many holes. No complaints though because if golf was easy we would not enjoy it.

The winning fourball, or should I say threeball, needed a ghost to complete their score.

That being said, the three players Joe Carpenter, Billy Smith and Dave Craig scored well and deserved first place with 90 points counting out second-placed Ben Enslin, John Watkins, Derek Weightman and Stella Scott.

The best man and lady went to Derek Weightman and Sarah Bergh.

The coveted Stone Trophy went home with one of Gus Crous, Ernie Shore, Dave Gibson or Bill Oliver.

A fourball who had such contrasting nines that it left everyone wondering what was in their half way coffee.

We look forward to the next meeting at Scottburgh in October.
