Off the Hook: Fishing is more than a breeze

There are still plenty of shad around the South Coast even though shad season is almost over.

The mid-South Coast has been experiencing strong winds over the past several days.

This has made fishing rather difficult for most, especially shore and deep sea fishermen.

If you choose to head down to the beach, river or if you’re taking the boats out, do be cautious.

There are still plenty of shad around the South Coast even though shad season is almost over.

This popular catch is usually found in sandy and/or rocky areas, from the shore down to depths of 100m.

Catches of bronze bream and garrick have also been common for the past week or so.

Garrick are large predatory fish that live close to shore. They’re found along the coast from Cape Point to Cape Vidal, but internationally this species can also be found in the Mediterranean and the waters around West Africa.

Garrick can only be caught by recreational fishermen with special permits, but no South African fishermen are allowed to sell these fish.
