Herald Fishing: Fishermen return from tough but rewarding nationals

An invitational team from the Czech Republic also took part in the tournament.

Three South Coast boys, representing KwaZulu-Natal in the recent South African Fly Fishing Youth Nationals, returned with the goods after a tough but rewarding competition.

The 2019 Youth SAFFA Nationals, hosted by Eastern Cape in the lovely town of Barkley East, was held from September 25 to 28.

An invitational team from the Czech Republic also took part in the tournament.

There was very little water in the area and the anglers had to work hard for their fish.

Some anglers landed on the honey hole, like Justin Ashington, which earned him the trophy for the most fish caught.

Justin also shared the trophy for the biggest fish, a rainbow trout measuring 625mm.

He was also awarded his SASACC colours after competing in a friendly competition in the Czech Republic in June.

Liam van der Merwe received the Willem Pretorius trophy of excellence for the best performing Protea angler at the world championships.

Now it’s time to buckle down for matric finals for them.

Yellowfin tuna are present almost all year now. Shoals of bonito are arriving and sightings of our Natal snoek should improve especially along inshore colour lines..

The bottom fishing has also continued to produce some great catches.

Bronze bream still on the bite and reports of some huge ones being landed.

Garrick still on the run. There are reports of anglers catching shad along the coast. Please release these shad as the season is closed.

The bass fishing in KZN is on fire. All of the local waters are producing some proper fish, well over 4kg, with some getting close to 6kg.

Tight lines and screaming reels.
