Triple treat for Umdoni juniors
The junior team will play in the South African U19 Interprovincial at Oubaai Golf Club during the December holidays.
THREE Umdoni Park golfers have been chosen for the KwaZulu-Natal junior golf team. That’s pretty good going for a lower South Coast club.
The boys in question are Mitch Hampson and Cubitt twins, Jack and Luke. All three are in grade 11 at Westville Boys’ High School, so still have another year at this level.

They’ve benefited from being part of the Southern KwaZulu-Natal squad set up, having played league and Interzone (country districts), rubbing shoulders with the likes of senior players Gavin Sole and Sean Baker.
The junior team will play in the South African U19 Interprovincial at Oubaai Golf Club during the December holidays.
It comprises Kyle Kistensamy (Prince’s Grant – captain), Astin Arthur (Umhlali CC), Cade Cryer (Mount Edgecombe CC), Jack Cubitt (Umdoni Park), Luke Cubitt (Umdoni Park), Mitch Hampson (Umdoni Park), Sean Paxton (Victoria CC) and Nathan Trodd (Maritzburg GC).

Mitch was more relieved than anything to hear he’d made the team. “My game isn’t great at the moment, luckily I played well in earlier tournaments,” he laughed.
The truth is his game isn’t bad at all, he simply expects a lot of himself. He said making the team had been a goal of his this year.
“I feel like my game needs a bit of improvement before we go and I’m sure that will happen with the help of my coach Paul Bowden who has been working with me to get to where I am now. There is some work to be done to get to the bigger stage but the main focus for now is to be an asset to the team,” he said.
Meanwhile, Luke was pleased with the results he had seen from some hard work on the putting green.
“I’ve put in some long hours working on certain drills which have improved my stroke,” he said.

Overall, he’s thrilled with the news of his selection. “This is a team I have really wanted to make. I had a good run in the July holiday tournaments which helped my stroke average,” he said.
For Jack, it meant that the hours put in on the range and all the traveling to tournaments to play had been worth it.
“It is a great achievement and I am so stoked to have been selected,” he said.
He felt his game was in ‘a pretty good spot’ at the moment, having recently played his way through some not-so-great form.
At the moment exams are a focus, so practice and play has had to take a back seat.
