Off the Hook: Game fish on the bite

Rock and surf fishermen had some luck with honeycombs and some sandies too

SOME big game fish have put in an appearance of late, with catches of tuna, couta and some wahoo being reported.

And as for the bottom fish, geelbek appeared to be plentiful.

Rock and surf fishermen had some luck with honeycombs and some sandies too.

One of the country’s biggest and most conservation-minded fishing competitions, the 12X12 Species, took place in St Lucia last week.

What’s nice about this competition is that 12 species of fish are nominated and each team is only allowed to catch and weigh-in five specimens of each species.

The idea is that limiting the number of catches minimises the competition’s impact on fish populations, which is good for conservation.

The weather has been a little on and off over the last week, with some days delivering clear skies and sunshine, while others were windy and chilly.

I’m sure most people have heard about the sardines putting in a brief appearance, thanks to some icy cold weather.

Durban fishermen spotted a shoal of sards, and managed to net a few crates full which sold like crazy.

One of locals said he paid R800 for a crate…madness!
