Wattrus remains in fine ‘nick’

As the Umkomaas course was being used for the men's Interclub we welcomed the Strand Strikers for their regular Saturday morning game and good reports all round were relayed to the captain and manager.

IT was ‘squeaky bum’ time for a while on Sunday as the Welshmen pushed the Bokke to the limit.

So, on Saturday it’s the Souties and Boertjies all over again. Wear your colours with pride and let the best team win.

Once he starts winning he just can’t stop as once again Nick Wattrus, along with Linda Els and Dennis Brown, steamrolled their way to a 10 point win with 82 points over Bob Hall, Hilton McAuliffe and Colin Moodie’s 72 points in Wednesdays three ball Alliance, played in almost perfect conditions, although the wind did pick up later.

It was a close call for Stone Last but the two Michaels, Eley and Marriot, along with Geoff Thommasen just back from a fishing holiday, narrowly beat all comers.

Another Nick, this time Bremner, had a good day on Friday as he won the nine hole Chicken run with 18 points sponsored by the Halls.

The six ladies who went to play in the Interclub tournament played at Richards Bay had a great time.

They were hosted by club president Ian Walker and his wife Lynelle at their holiday home, with evening cruises up and down the rive. Did someone mention booze?

Unfortunately, one day was lost to a severe lightening storm but the ladies played well enough to finish in the top half of the team log.

Debbie du Toit and Lauren Davey counted out for finishing runners-up in the bronze division whilst Mandy Jones, Hayley Gilliver, Linda Hall and Janet Beckerly, who came out from England, especially for the tournament, finished 23rd equal in the standings of 66 teams.

They all had a great time meeting up with old friends and making many new ones.

The ladies would like to also thank Hambanathi, part of the Halfway Toyota group, for the loan of the kombi and trailer, and not forgetting Bob and Linda Hall who supplied the CMC shirts.

P&G Constuction held their monthly betterball Stableford in the afternoon once again played in almost perfect conditions.

The count out rule once again determined that John Mills and Mike Hogan took home the whisky with Captain Bob and his vice Hilton taking the wine.

In third place just one adrift were past Captain Shaun Jenkins and sponsors representative Coenie du Bruyn on 42.

Bob also managed to pick up nearest the pin on the 5th whilst Russel Freeman took the 10th.

Russel made his 2-club along with Nick Wattrus and Shaun Jenkins but Bob and Hilton had the last laugh as they both picked the right holes for the jackpot.

Mick Marriot is off to Australia for a couple of months this week and as a farewell gift the Captain presented him and Geoff Thommasen with the Stone just as a reminder to come home safely.

On Wednesday it’s a medal Stableford where everybody plays off scratch and adds their handicap to their score at the end, there will be a handicap limit.

On Saturday we will play an alliance after the rugby has finished, that is if anyone is sober enough to actually hit the ball.

Flyer’s footnote: In golf you need a fantastic memory to remember the great shots and a very short memory to forget the bad ones.
