Two young golfers from Margate may have the chance to play golf in the US soon, thanks to a local development programme, and the US Kids Golf set-up.
Kungawo Cekiso and Olwethu Mpondo have improved their games under the watchful eye of Thami Xolo of Gcilima at the junior clinics held at Margate Country Club each Saturday morning.

These clinics are part of the Mayor’s golf academy to promote the sport, especially among children from the more rural areas.
The two juniors recently played in a US Kids Golf tournament at Bryanston Country Club in Johannesburg.
They flew up with Thami and their parents to enjoy the new challenge.

The tournament had different age categories.
Olwethu played in the U12 age group against, among others, Amohelang Nonkonyane, the grandson of former minister Nomvula Nonkonyane.
She placed first in the girls section.
Kungawo played against five other opponents in the U9 age group category.
Practices have now taken on a deeper significance as there is now something to play for, with more tournaments coming up in which to try and qualify for an invitation to play in the US.
It’s hoped that their progress may also inspire others to get involved.
The fathers of the two players thanked Thami for his efforts.
They also encouraged other parents to get their children involved in the sport at a young age.
