Herald Fishing: Bass and garrick dominate fishing scene

There's good news for shad fishermen.

The second edition of the South Coast Bass Challenge took place last Saturday.

The organisers, South Coast Bass Association, hosted a great group of anglers with beautiful weather on the day.

The longest fish for the day was landed by club chairman, Thys Hoffman, measuring in at 58.5cm and 3.09kg.

The winners per dam on the day were: Dam 1 – Kayla Wiid 45 cm. Dam 2 – Thys Hoffman 58.5 cm. Dam 3 – Werner Grobler 40 cm.

In other news, the big flatfish and sharks are here to stay and with the north-easterly winds, the sea is calling all inedible anglers.

Shad season re-opens this Sunday (1st).

Reports have been coming in from along the entire coast with everything from bronze bream, pompano to grey sharks being caught.

Anglers fishing on the Sandspit and The Block in Port Shepstone have been catching a lot of garrick on live bait.

Bronze bream are still on the bite, thanks to the discoloured water.

Cracker shrimps works best for bronze bream and kob in these conditions.

Chokka and prawn are going to be the two most important baits to have in your bait box.

For the brusher you are going to want to use a crab and place it in some rough working water in a rocky gully or ledge.

The rock and surf scene is starting to get properly hot with reports flooding in of inedibles.

Reports of anglers fishing in estuaries are having a lot of fun catching rock salmon, kingfish and grunter especially on a very warm day.

This is a great time of year for the bass. They are feeding with extra vigour and aggressively attacking most of the bigger baits or topwaters.

The past week has not held the best of weather but that hasn’t stopped many of the anglers from trying.
