Visitors emerge victorious

Our supporters enjoyed watching good competitive bowls and their presence was appreciated and most encouraging.

THE last Atlanta Spur mixed numbers competition of the year, well organised by Moira Millard, was won by Gina George, Colin Hudson (of Iron- Man fame), and vocalist Fred Hutchins from AMBC on a score of 4+52.

Two shots behind the winners were runners-up Kevin and Sandy O’Donoghue and Tony Hoggins.

Second session went to Geoff and Jenny Donaldson, who with Taffy Knight, scored 2+12.

Once again a big thank you to our sponsors, Atlanta Spur, John Dory’s and Pennington Superette for their continuous support.

Tea was enjoyed after the first session when Jerry Davey, Clair Helfrich, Gay Symons and Jean Shannon provided tasty snacks.

Ellie Woolcock assisted by husband, Peter, did a fine job fitting 40 players on the one available green for the scheduled mixed 2-4-2 competition.

Peter had to do a bit of juggling to cope with a non-arrival team but kept his cool and put plan B into action using two players who just ‘rocked up’ hoping for a game.

Mixed fours was played to accommodate the entry so nominated pairs joined forces to make up rink’s teams.

Winners of the Bell and Anchor fours competition at Sezela BC are (from left) Corrie and Cassie van Aswegen, Pam Lyon and Rod Black.

A score of 2+15 by Lyn Clifton, Penny Ridgway, Tom Botha and Peter Woolcock won the second session prize donated by Vrystaat Biltong.

Umdoni Park Golf Club restaurant vouchers were won by runners-up Gay Symons, Kevin White who with our friendly Scottburgh visitors, Jan and Marie Vosloo scored 4+5.

Meanwhile, 4+8 was good enough to win The Bell and Anchor main prize for Corrie and Cassie van Aswegen, Pam Lyon and Rod Black.

Jovial Cassie made a victory speech in her own ‘taal’ and made it very clear she was proud of this win and her heritage and insisted on her team being photographed. Mooi so meisie!

Thanks to our sponsors and to Veronica D’Oriordan, Dave Billet, Charles Douglas and Jerry Davey for providing tea time snacks.

No need to ask Jerry why he is doing snacks for all our competitions lately as on his current bowling form it is the only way the Sezela club single champion’s name is going to appear in the weekly news report for the Mail!

Playing league matches at Scottburgh, Sandy O’Donoghue, Gay Symons and Avril Black went down 15-25 and Jenny Wadeley, Irene Hutton and Pam Lyon lost by one shot against Margate.

Sandy’s team then drew and Jenny’s won by seven shots against Riverside.

The ladies expressed their appreciation of the supporters who travelled to Scottburgh to cheer the side on.

Sezela hosted The Bell men’s team who remain unbeaten in the second division league after their 5-0 victory over the home side.

In Jerry Davey’s absence, Schumie Gibson skipped Herbie Beverley, Mike Carr and Chris Geyer and were beaten 15-26.

Ian Adam, Roger Lane, Corrie van Aswegen and Mally Swanby fared a bit better and were peeling after 20 ends then succumbed to the strong Louw Vermeulen team who won this closely contested game by two shots.

A new-look, bearded Frank Spenceley made a welcome return to the club last week with wife Joanne who had not been well for the past few weeks.

Both played in Friday’s competition and clearly there was no loss of form during their sabbatical.
