Cyclists ride to remember Burry Stander

As usual, the cyclists took on the daunting Mushroom Hill.

For the seventh year running, cyclists rode in remembrance of legendary mountain biker, Burry Stander, of Umtentweni.

A group of local riders united to celebrate the life of the South African Olympic cyclist, who was killed on January 3, 2013 when he was struck by a minibus taxi while training in Shelly Beach.

Vincent van Aswegen said that although the route was wet and challenging due to the inclement weather, he felt ‘honoured’ to be able to ride4burry.

“I sincerely hope that the memorial ride tradition will never fade away. I never knew Burry but I will always respect his achievements as an athlete,” he said.

Nicholas de Bruin (15) said it was ‘a really amazing ride’, celebrating Burry.

“It’s amazing how one athlete could bring so many wonderful people from different backgrounds to achieve one goal (to get up mushroom hill),” he said.

“I’ll definitely be back next year.”
