Gus Crous honoured by Eagles

It was a fitting tribute for a man who has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

IT was a hot and humid morning but even a carnivorous bird like an eagle needs some greens.

So, being the first Tuesday of the month and also the first Tuesday of a new golfing year, the Village Eagles made their way to Umkomaas Golf Club in order to feed on the fairways and greens that a well-conditioned golf course provides.

Although rain was predicted the weather gods treated the Eagles much better than the forecasters and kept everybody dry.

Highlight of the meeting was the awarding of honorary life membership of the society to the hard-working Gus Crous.

Congratulations and well done Gus, you thoroughly deserve the accolade.

The fine’s master, Dave Arnison, had a field day and collected a whopping R600 from golfers who he believed had misbehaved not that there was no help from other golfers.

Just goes to show you that when it comes to money even your best friends cannot be trusted with a secret.

Never fear, the money goes to a good cause. Well done to all for their generosity.

The committee member responsible for sourcing prizes, John Watkins, did an exceptional job resulting in prizes being awarded down to eighth place.

Thanks to John and to all of our generous sponsors.

First place went to Mervyn Perry, Charlie Vogel, Clive Melville and Stella Scott.

I suppose that the adage, behind every successful three men is a woman telling them how to putt, can be applied to the winning team.

Best lady golfer Stella Scott and best male golfer Dave Craig.

Stella also won the best lady prize and Dave Craig was the best male golfer.

The coveted Stone Trophy went to Willie Boucher, Billy Smith, Ernie Shore and Ken McKenzie.

Ernie took the gap and left without helping to lift the heavy trophy, an action I am sure that was filed away by next month’s fine’s master.

It was not all golf this month and the Village Eagles held their annual general meeting the next day.

The outgoing chairman Geoff Bacon read his final report and as he went through it the numbers and the reported activities just confirmed the success of the society.

Thanks have to go to Geoff for leading the society on this very successful path.
