Like son, like father as Pete powers on
The new year started off with the monthly medal sponsored by Halfway Toyota.
IT’S the start of a new year and I wish all fellow members and local golfers a great time on the course.
It seems as if I was penning a similar wish this time last week – where did the year go?
The new year started off with the monthly medal sponsored once again by Halfway Toyota long may our partnership succeed.
There were quite a few visitors playing and still enjoying our hospitality.

Pete Gilliver, picking up on son Jason’s recent form, had the best gross score in the A division with 75 with Gary Palmer taking the nett with 73.
Captain Bob Hall had the best gross in the B division with 84 and Willie Lombard had a 71 for the nett prize.
It was a close run affair in the C division as Geoff Thommasen scored 40 points to win by one from Russel Freeman on 39.
But it was sponsor’s representative Russel who took the first medal of the year with a nett 66. Geoff is still having nightmares over the 16th – don’t ask!
However, Geoff did find the hidden holes to compensate with the alliance being won by Pete Gilliver, Gary Jones, Denis Brown and Geoff Thommasen.
Dave and Janet Beckerly sponsored the Wednesday competition played as a betterball Stableford as they will soon be returning to the colder climes of England.
Sponsor Dave didn’t let go of the first prize too quickly as he and Ken Green jetted in with 49 points to easily win by four over second placed Bob Hall and Tony Power on 45.
The ladies team of Mandy Jones and Lauren Davey picked up third place with 44 and Mandy also found the hidden holes along the way.
Nearest the pins went to Tony Power (2nd), Graham Brown (5th), Gerrit Meyer (10th), Lauren Davey (13th) and Captain Bob (17th).
Tony Moore and Denis Brown chose the Stone as their prize and contributed towards its upkeep.
It was the Birthday bash of the October, November and December boys on Saturday with still a few visitors tagging happily along in a fourball alliance.
Denis Brown (of Stone fame) came back to manage the team of Gary Jones, Herman Grotius and Coenie du Bruyn to win with 90 points and to win by three from Heera and Nivash Mahabeer, Reuben Kisten and Saga Govindsamy on 87.
They were just one ahead of Gareth Walker, Nick Bremner, Shaun du Plessis and Lloyd Trehearne.
Shaun Jenkins was nearest the pin on the 5th and ‘Bezo’ Bremner took the 10th.
Capt Bob and John Mills both found the hidden holes and visitors Les and Learn teamed up with ‘ghosts’ Brett Rowe and Gareth Walker to lift the Stone.
Hilton will be out and about in the next few weeks looking for the birthday boys of January, February and March, seeking their ‘donations’ towards the next bash.
On the 23rd January the Nomads will be playing here and anyone wishing to join them can leave their names with Bob who will fit them into a fourball.
It’s been a rough start to the year for the Daniels boys with both Reg (past captain) and brother Keith (the pickle man) both being hospitalised.
Thys Swart is up and about after his recent setback and is looking forwards to swinging his clubs again.
Flyer’s footnote; A new golfer excuses his dismal performances on poor lies, with experience he covers up with better ones.
