Herald Fishing: Warmer weather leads to unpredictable fishing

Most of the KwaZulu-Natal dams are fishing incredibly well.

The sea has been rather warm over the past few weeks and this has led to unpredictable fishing.

That being said, there have still been some very happy anglers and some great catches this past week.

The fishable days have definitely made up for the miserable weather and big seas that have limited the amount of days on the water.

The inedible anglers have been going dilly over the hot weather and north east winds that have been blowing.

These conditions bring prime big fish angling.

The anglers dropping baits with the drones have been testing their tackle properly.

This is big fish territory, so don’t go in with a knife when you need a cannon.

The South Coast continues to have an influx of kingfish.

The giant and blacktip kingfish have been full up along most of the South Coast.

Anglers using well-presented squid/chokka baits and the guys fishing with artificials have been hooking in to these brutes.

A live shad or karanteen is also a good bet at hooking in to one of the larger specimens.

These are very strong and dirty fighters, so do not fish too light for them.

The rest of the South Coast has had the usual catches.

Points are fishing well for the inedibles with a few hidings being dished out.

Gullies and sandy beaches have been the spots to go to for the edibles with bronze bream and kob making up the bulk of the catches.

Freshwater fishing has been going well for both the specimen and conventional carp anglers.

Bass fishing has ebbed and flowed but most days see the guys walking off with a smile rather than a frown.

Most of the KwaZulu-Natal dams are fishing incredibly well.

These fish are vital for the future of the bass population, so treat them well and release them as quickly as possible.

Anglers are still having a lot of fun fishing in the estuaries along the South Coast. Rock salmon, kingfish and perch still on the bite.
