First round thriller in KBA mixed pairs

There has been some tremendously exciting bowls played.

EIGHTEEN teams enjoyed cooler weather in last week’s mixed trips competition.

Duty barman Kevin White, who was in magnificent form, led the way with Gay Symons and Dave Lyon, to a victorious score of 4+17.

His delivery behind the bar was just as good as on the green.

John Aldhouse, Jean Shannon and Doug Skinner took runners-up prize on 4+10.

Skip John made special mention of Doug, his lead, who was also in great form.

Second session prize was won by Corrie and Cassie van Aswegen and Jenny Wadeley, scoring 2+11.

Grateful thanks to new sponsor, Botha House, which donated breakfast vouchers for the winners, equally so to The Doghouse Cafe and Scottfin Insurance Brokers who kindly sponsored the other prizes.

Gay Symons, Cassie van Aswegen, Gina Lane, Engela Wehr and Jean Shannon provided the much enjoyed tea time snacks.

AMBC‘s twilight bowls, which began on Wednesday, proved to be an excellent, well organised fun event.

Our neighbours must be complimented on their efforts, participating teams look forward to the next rounds.

The after match braai and camaraderie was superb and, by the way we also played 15 ends of bowls.

Rod and Avril Black and Gay Symons made up one team and Mike and Claire Helfrich with Mally Swanby the other of two Sezela teams entered, both sides winning their games.

Jerry Davey with Gay Symons and Sandy O’Donoghue with Mally Swanby played in the first round of the KBA mixed pairs tournament, the former at Umkomaas and the latter at Hibberdene.

Jerry and Gay won one and lost one and are unlikely to go through to the next round.

A ’round robin’ of three matches each consisting of 15 ends was played.

Sandy and Mally peeled their first match 11 all after being 2-9 down against Riverside on the 9th end.

They then had a ding-dong battle with our good friends Dave and Mel Arnison finishing well in the last two ends to win 16-11.

This section’s winners were decided in Sandy’s and Mally’s final game against Ryan Keys and Cindy McMurtry from The Bell.

The Sezela team were well ahead after three ends, leading 10-0 but Cindy and Ryan came back strongly and the match went down to the wire.

The Bell team needing five shots to win on the last end were lying four shots with a very composed Cindy to deliver the last bowl which looked well on track to give her team the victory. Alas!

The bowl went into the head slightly shifting a couple of bowls and after a breath-taking measure for the fifth shot, Sezela were winners by a whisker. What a match!

Colin McCleod was admitted to Kingsway Hospital after he fell and broke ribs.

Specialists found he had a lung infection which they cleared then had him transferred to St. Augustine’s Hospital to have a pacemaker fitted.

Sezela bowlers and friends rallied round to support Liz and assist with transport and other needs, we wish Colin well and a speedy recovery.

How very comforting that in time of need ‘The Friendly Club’ is always there to help.
