‘No jokes, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy’

Next week is the first monthly mug for 2020 and tee times are available from the pro shop.

IT seems fitting that the Umkomaas Golf Club Joker was finally pulled at the end of ‘Januworry’ as the pool, built over several months, topped a useful R8000.

The lucky ticket drawn belonged to Wally Kent who, unusually, had not been able to stay for prize-giving.

Lady captain, Linda Toward, was nominated to pick a card on his behalf and, without any hesitation, pulled the Joker.

While there were understandably some grumbles of disappointment from those hoping to still be in with a chance to bag the cash next time, the consensus was that it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

Well done Wally, we hope you will enjoy your winnings!

Saturday’s competition, betterball bonus bogey was well supported with 35 players in the field.

The wind came up strongly for the latter half of the game, but this didn’t seem to trouble some as the scores were impressive.

Winning on an excellent +9 were Keith Vergottini and Willy Boucher.

In second place, on a countout at +8, were Graham Coxell and George Dowie, edging Tash Naicker and Kevesh Seepersad into third.

It was a good day to come in with the Jackpot as the pool has carried forward over the past few weeks and Nelson Moonsamy’s 10 points on the designated four holes did it.

Mike Lithgow was also the only accurate one, it seems, as he collected the 2-club pool all on his own.

Every Friday afternoon Umkomaas holds a 6-pin competition to kick off the weekend.

Everyone is welcome, including those who might not have an official handicap yet.

Play the 6-pin loop (1st, 2nd, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th) and stand a chance to win cash prizes.

Tee off any time from 2pm with the final summer tee time at 4pm.

It’s a great way to unwind from the week and get some practice in before the weekend’s golf.
