Off the Hook: Yellowfin tuna take the bait

Other offshore catches have included some nice-sized couta and dorado.

YELLOWFIN tuna have been on the bite lately, much to the delight of anglers.

These fish are among the larger tuna species and can reach a weight of up to 180kgs.

They’re found in tropical and subtropical waters and live in the mixed surface layer of the ocean above the thermocline which divides the upper mixed layer from the calm and deeper waters below.

A yellowfin tuna’s diet consists of squid, pelagic crustaceans and other fish.

For the best chance of landing one of these magnificent fish, the experts recommend mackerel and maasbanker as live bait.

Other offshore catches have included some nice-sized couta and dorado.

Rock and surf fishermen have had a lot of edible catches, including blacktail and bronze bream.
