Herald fishing: Be prepared to fight for hound shark

Fishing over the past week has been up and down for all facets.

Edible fishing has begun to pick up and there have been some very nice pompano and stumpnose caught by the anglers targeting them.

The offshore fishing in KZN has been wild for the last few weeks. There have been some splendid catches from all vessels, be it a jet-ski, fishing kayak or a ski-boat.

Reports of kob, muscle cracker, stumpnose, pompano and bronze bream have come in over the past week.

Baits of choice have been crabs, pink prawn and chokka, so if you are making an edible trip down south, make sure you have enough of each of the three groups of these baits.

Remember that you require a licence to collect anything from the sea or beach so make sure you have the appropriate paperwork before you go about using any natural bait.

For the inedible anglers, it’s that time of the year to target hound sharks of deep points.

These fish like the colder water and love a fresh fish bait.

Mullet, mackerel and chokka are the baits of choice when targeting these fish. Remember that they fight well above their weight, so come prepared for a fight.
