Jack flies high with eagle and an ace

Two eagles in seven holes helped him maintain his position on the leaderboard.

ACK Cubitt of Umdoni Park Golf Club finished in a commendable third place at the KwaZulu-Natal Invitational at Amanzimtoti GC last Sunday.

It was a day of excitement, error and eventually satisfaction for the young player, who is in matric at Westville Boys’ High.

He carded 71 and 73 for a level par day, finishing six behind the winner, Kyle Kistensamy of Prince’s Grant.

Jono Broomhead of Durban Country Club was second, one shot behind.

“I eagled the first hole in the afternoon round and then proceeded to get my first hole-in-one, on the 7th. In between all the excitement there were many silly drops that saw me end up with a score that was worse than it should have been,” said Jack.

He said the greens were playing a lot softer than is usual at Toti, due to all the rain last Friday and Saturday, which helped when hitting approach shots.

“The course was pretty good overall and the weather wasn’t bad in the morning but the wind got up in the afternoon,” he said.

His fellow Umdoni Park teammate, Mitch Hampson, had scores of 75 and 78.

Jack’s twin brother Luke had an afternoon to forget, following up a reasonable morning round of 75 with an uncharacteristically inconsistent 86.
