Pensioner John ‘scratches’ around

Thanks to Umdoni for the hospitality, sponsorship and food, all up to the expected high standard.

THE Village Eagles golf day is only played once a month but the fun and fellowship must last forever because before you are finished talking about your last game it dawns on you that the next game is the next day.

Here we are in March and the Eagles flew in from the north, the south and the west.

I have left out the east because unless your name is Neptune you would not be resident east of Umdoni Park Golf Club.

Yes, Umdoni Park was the venue of our March gathering and a good, enjoyable gathering it was.

The course, as usual, was in great condition and the scores on the day were evidence of this.

The golfers were in fine condition as well, with the Village Eagles Golf Society bragging that one of their own is now a scratch golfer.

Due to his consistent low scoring the handicapper had no alternative but to advise John Havemann that his handicap is now zero (zippo). Not bad for a pensioner, John.

Unable to avoid the Stone are (from left) Dave Arnison, chairman Eddie Matthews, Clive Melville, George Dowie and Dennis Midlemiss.

Umdoni is rated as the third most fun golf course to play in South Africa.

Well, it is also the most testing because the scenery makes it difficult to keep your head down and golfers are very aware of what happens if you have that ailment called ‘head up’.

Not all of the flock had their heads up and the winning team of Rex Parsons, Derek Hodge, John Watkins and Ian Lovett did what all cricketers dream of by scoring 100 points. Well batted chaps.

The best lady trophy went to Dot Linaker, once again, and the best male golfer was Tony Butler.

I take my life into my hands when I publish the names of the winners of the Stone Trophy but although it is a tough job someone has to do it.

Winners of the Village Eagles March game are (from left) Ian Lovett, Rex Parsons, Derek Hodge and John Watkins, with Chairman Eddie Matthews.

So, please do not tell Dave Arnison, Clive Melville, Dennis Middlemiss or George Dowie where I live!
