Big Fish hooks title number 11

The champs were closer than expected this year.

Gavin Sole won his 11th strokeplay title and ninth in a row at Southbroom Golf Club a few weeks ago.

In the women’s section, Heather Anderson, who hails from Scotland, won the title for at least the fifth time.

Gavin shot 71 and 74, which is possibly his worst score ever to win the title.

The eight he made on the 3rd hole on Sunday didn’t help. Can’t be often he has made six birdies and shot over par!

The weather was breezy enough to make it a challenge but the course was in magnificent condition.

David shot 75 and 72 and provided mostly ‘nuisance’ value.

He was never quite truly in contention but the Big Fish kept making silly errors to keep him within reach when he should have been out of sight.

The 16th on Sunday changed things a bit where Gavin make a double bogey and David holed a putt from just off the green for birdie.

Suddenly the lead was only one shot.

Gavin though showed his class when it mattered, hitting the pin with his third on the 17th, tapping in a three foot birdie putt to extend the lead back to two.

Both made birdies on the last hole, so it was comfortable enough in the end.

Malcolm Greenland (80 and 77) and Mike Anthony (77 80) tied for third.

In the B division, Detlef Wichmann had a strong showing on Sunday to ensure no one got close to him, winning on scores of 83 and 79.

Russell Mackenzie was next on 85 and 83, with third place going to Alex Crawford on 87 and 85.

Overall nett winner was Mike Anthony on 145, three ahead of George Haynes.

Best Saturday nett went to Cyprian Xolo on 71, counting out Bob Carmichael.

Best Sunday nett was won by Martin Hutton on 73, by one from Chris Miller.

C division was Roger Phillips on 74, which comprised rounds of 38 points and 36 points.

It was incredibly close, with Jim Cook just a point behind, with 38 and 35.

Malcolm Moorley wasn’t far off, in third place on 72 points, with 35 and 27.

Best Saturday score went to chairman John Fox on 34 points, from Werner Duggan and John Neaves on 33 points.

Best Sunday nett was won by Andrew Leckie on a superb 40 points, from Gerald FitzGerald on 38 points.

The putting competition on the Saturday night was won by David Rush, who beat Gavin Sole in the final, 1-up.

En route he knocked out Bob Carmichael, Grant Richards and George Bothma, all in very close games.

In the women’s section, multiple past champion Heather had rounds of 82 and 85, low enough to ensure a comfortable win in the silver division over Janet Humphrey who had 92 and 97.

Bronze winner was Anita Landolf on scores of 94 and 98, just two ahead of Sandy FitzGerald.

Meanwhile, Augustine D’Ewes won the copper division by five shots, with scores of 98 and 99.

Runner-up was Eli Bachman on 107 and a much improved 95.

Best nett overall went to Lorraine Cook on 149, by three from Jean Cole.

Best nett on Saturday was Alexandra Huber on 73, while Shelley Myers had the best nett on Sunday on 70.
