Captain Cameron keeps up cricket success

At this stage cricket is his first love, and when he is not opening the batting, he keeps wicket, or bowls some spin.

There are a number of young cricketers on the South Coast coming through the ranks in the U11 age group.

One of these is Cameron Olivant (10) of Southcity Christian School.

He had the privilege of captaining the U11 Southern KwaZulu-Natal team at the recent KZN Schools Festival in Durban.

Cameron was cricket and hockey player of the year at Southcity in his grade 3 year.

At this stage cricket is his first love, and when he is not opening the batting, he keeps wicket, or bowls some spin.

He’s also a talented hockey player and a handy golfer, when he gets the chance to play.

Keeping it on the greens, he is a very promising bowler – not the cricketing type – and has already attracted attention from some of the better bowlers in the region.

Cameron looks up to his father Gareth, himself an exceptionally gifted all-round sportsman, coach and teacher.

“He has coached me in most of my sports. The thing he tells me to do most often is ‘keep my head still’.”

He is motivated by the love of the game and watching players like AB de Villiers motivate him to do better.

He has a mature head on young shoulders and has realised that to get back into top form requires a lot of practice and dedication.

When in top gear, Cameron can make playing sport look easy – perhaps because he’d prefer to let the ball do the moving, as opposed to having to run and run for no real reason!
