Golfers wait and hope for leniency as lockdown eases

The KZN Golf Union has had to postpone fixtures in the meantime, but if Government does a U-turn league games may be a possibility, albeit remote one.

Golfers are hoping the sport will be cut some slack in stage 4 of the national lockdown.

But it’s unlikely, even though many would suggest that four people on one fairway is safer than 50 in a queue at supermarket.

Whatever the case, the golfers are itching to get back out into some wide open space, enjoying the (usually) wonderful autumn weather.

There’s an argument being made for golf to be permitted, but without necessarily opening the clubhouses, in order to observe the all-important social distancing at this point – in an effort to flatten the Covid-19 curve.

GOLF-CHAT: Elvis Khawula – golf is in his blood

This is, of course, if all goes well with regards to the spread of the disease.

The local team has a number of players to select from, provided they are available and keen.

These include Gavin Sole, David Rush, Van Zyl Greyling, Gary Purtell and Cyprian Xolo (all Southbroom GC); Graham Fabricius (Port Shepstone); Jason Gilliver, Mitch Hampson, Jack Cubitt, Luke Cubitt and Mikhail van Brakel (all Umdoni Park); Elvis Khawula and Robert Mavundla (both Margate CC).

The game on May 31 is against Mount Edgecombe CC ‘A’ at Southbroom GC.

Then there is a game against Durban CC ‘A’ at Durban CC on June 28, followed by a game on July 12 at Bluff National Park.
