GOLF-CHAT: Lizzie Currie – Spicing things up

Lizzie could have been a concert pianist, but she chose golf instead. She has been a member of the provincial team and considered life as a pro for a while.

Which was the first golf course you ever played at? Port Shepstone Country Club.

Career highlights? Beating South Africa’s number two at the time to win the KZN Amateur at Beachwood in 2015. I turned the game around from being 2-down to winning on the 17th hole. I went four under par through my last seven holes.

Schools you attended? Port Shepstone Junior Primary, Creston College and Southcity.

If you could win any of the Majors, which one? Easy … the Kraft Nabisco Championship, now renamed ANA Inspiration. The golf course always looks pristine and there is so much history behind the event. There is something about that 18th hole and by tradition, the winners gets to jump into Poppie’s Pond, which is always a fun highlight.

Holes in one? None. I have come super close a bunch of times and at the same golf course on the same hole – the 14th at Sheppie.

Albatross? Nope.

Dream fourball? Henrik Stenson, Ariya Jutanugarn and Suzann Pettersen.

Favourite meal and drink? I have recently turned to a plant-based diet for health reasons but my go-to and – well anyone who has been on golf tour with me would know – is steak, egg and chips. One hundred percent!

World Cup final, T20 cricket or rugby? T20.

Countries you have been to? Namibia and Zambia.

Historical figure (dead or alive) you would liked to have met? Maya Angelou. She was an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist.

Player you’d choose to hole a 6 foot putt to save your life? Amateur – myself; pro – So-yeon Ryu.

Luckiest shot that mattered? When a tree stopped my ball from going out of bounds and kept me in the match. I won the match and eventually made it as far as the semi-finals.

One shot or round or moment you’d like to be able to take over? In the SA Matchplay one year, in the semi-final against Zethu Myeki, I had a short putt to win and missed it. I choked. Would definitely like a mulligan on that putt!

Ever broken a club? No.

Interprovincial winners in 2014: The Spice Girls, (from left) Michaela Fletcher (Posh Spice), Tiffany Avern-Taplin (Ginger Spice) and Lizzie Currie (Scary Spice) celebrate their remarkable win at Mossel Bay.

Any injuries you’ve had to overcome? Rotator cuff issues on both shoulders. Have overcome my injuries, but I am still very careful.

Funniest thing you have ever experienced on golf course? When a fellow KZN team mate messed up a shot and the ball hit a duck. She started crying because she thought she killed it, which wasn’t the case.

What irritates you most in golf? When golfers park their golf carts in front of the green or just in the most inconvenient places.

Best advice received? Trust your swing.

Advice to anyone taking up the game? To just enjoy it first because at the end of the day, it is just a game. It is never how you start but how you finish.

Tell us something about yourself not many people know? Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a concert pianist, but then golf happened.

What’s next for you? I have started a social media marketing agency specifically golf related, Albatross Media SA. I will also be starting a podcast called Spilling the Tee. It’s all golf related and aimed at promoting and growing the game at all levels.
