GOLF-CHAT: Darren Gerrard – part golfer, part petrolhead
The career of this talented golfer and part-time petrolhead has not always gone exactly to plan, but he's not done yet.

Who introduced you to golf? Port Edward Primary.

Clubs have you been a member at? Port Edward, Southbroom, Margate, Durban CC/Beachwood, Drak Gardens.
Earliest memory of playing golf? The first day I started, we played gogo golf. I remember hitting a rubber ball with a 5-iron.
Career highlights? Winning club champs at Southbroom aged 16, playing for KZN at country districts and main IPT level. Winning a few clutch tournaments also felt good.
Golf course you would love to play? Augusta.

Schools attended? Westring Primary, Port Edward Primary, DHS, Creston college, a golf school in Cape Town.
How do you think other people would describe your swing? There will be many many different explanations!
Most famous person outside of golf you have met? Victoria Secrets model, Candice Swanepoel.

Best known golfer you’ve met or played with? Gavin Sole.
Holes in one? 4. Southbroom (4th and 11th), Royal Durban (3rd) and Selborne (4th).
Albatross? No.
Fourball of choice, amateur or pro? Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, one of my good friends and myself.

What song gets you onto the dance floor? ‘I like to move it’.
Favourite meal and drink? Burger and chipppss. Coke.
Favourite thing to watch on TV? Golf, car racing.
Countries you have been to? Portugal.
Non-golfing historical figure you would like to meet or have met? Travis Pastrana. He’s an American professional motorsports competitor and stunt performer who has won championships and X Games gold medals in several events, including supercross, motocross, freestyle motocross, and rally racing.

Player you’d choose to hole a 6 foot putt to save your life? Myself.
Luckiest shot you’ve had? Really?
One mulligan – a shot or round or moment you’d like to be able to take over? Qualifying School 2013 at Bloemfontein, I missed top 60 by one stroke, and missed a 2-foot tap-in on the last. I would mark it.
Ever broken a club, what happened? No, not on purpose.
Any injuries you’ve had to overcome? Shoulder injury, rotator cuff.
Funniest thing you have ever seen or experienced on golf course? A player falling into a dam is always funny.

One thing or rule you’d like to change in golf if you could? The price of a round of golf at certain clubs to drop.
Best and worst advice received? Best – don’t ever give up. Worst – listening to more than one person with swing or some kind of similar advice.
Tell us something about yourself not many people know? I’m the only person in my whole family that plays golf.
What’s next for you? Get a bit more stable and on my feet financially, give qualifying school another go, and then see what happens next.
