‘Support your golf club’ urges president Ivan Curlewis

Ivan Curlewis, the president of the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union, has urged golfers to support their local clubs once the lockdown restrictions are finally relaxed and the sport is permitted once again.
In the meantime, he asked golfers to support GolfRSA’s stance and remain patient, in the hope that discussions would prove fruitful, sooner rather than later.

This comes after some estate courses around the country have reportedly re-opened for estate residents.
Ivan has been a member at Margate CC for about 60 years now and has seen it all.
Well, he thought he had until Covid-19 arrived.
He said he understood the frustrations, but felt that the splinter groups and petitions would not really help golf’s cause, and that GolfRSA could be trusted to do the right thing.
It’s no secret that golf is suffering, like the rest of the world’s economy.
One club in the province has already closed with the sad possibility that a few others could follow suit.
For this reason Ivan called on local golfers to support their clubs by playing golf again, maintaining their memberships, and enjoying meals and beverages in the clubhouse.
“I’m sure clubs will be inventive and find creative ways to get the golfers playing again,” he said.
He urged those who’ve had too long a break and may have found other hobbies, not to forget the joy and camaraderie the sport offers and to get their regular game going again, in time.

On a positive, he said the early winter conditions of courses on the coast was fantastic.
When not working at the pharmacy, he’s been out on the course with his son Andrew, the pro at Margate, helping with course maintenance.
“I reckon Margate is in the best condition it’s been in for some time,” he said.
It’s been a similar situation at other clubs, like Port Shepstone, Southbroom, San Lameer and the Wild Coast.
The courses are looking wonderful and members are itching to get out there.
