‘Never been a better time to learn to play golf’

Southbroom Golf Club professional Derek James felt it represented a unique, wonderful opportunity.
“It is the perfect time to learn how to play the game,” he said. “It truly is the greatest game of all. It’s played in a safe, healthy, disciplined and friendly environment.”
He’s seen a number of juniors emerge, those that might have been playing rugby or hockey at the moment.
Some have teed it up at Port Shepstone CC and Margate CC as well as Southbroom GC.
But with some of these not permitted at the moment, golf has been the ‘go to’ sport for parents needing to get their active children out of the house and into some sunlight and fresh air.
“I really believe now is an opportune time to have a major drive to get more people playing golf and getting them to understand the game. There are just so many benefits,” said Derek.
It’s not just about the juniors, though.
Golf is a sport anyone of any age can take up. Yes, it’s a difficult sport to master, but it’s not that hard that you can’t get in a few good hits during a round – and enjoy the company of friends.
Ivan Curlewis, the president of the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union and a member at Margate CC, encouraged golfers to supporting their clubs, especially once the actual clubhouses are allowed to fully open as this is a massively important aspect of the survival of any club.
